Using DNA sequence analysis, we have discovered over 100 novel bacterial species in the past decade that are different enough from any that have been described previously to merit publication as new species!

We have already published two of our novel species and named them in honor of people who have had an impact at Lycoming College.

  • Chryseobacterium piperi was named in honor of Dr. John F. Piper Jr, History Professor from 1974-1993 and Dean of the College from 1993-2007
  • Chryseobacterium angstadtii was named in honor of Dr. Robert Angstadt, Physiology Professor from 1967-2004
  • We are attempting to develop a novel mechanism to support our research. Through your tax-deductible donation to the Lycoming College Novel Microbe research fund, you can provide opportunities for Enhanced Academic Experiences for our students.

Currently, we seek funding to support student presentation of their research at conferences such as the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) meetings or the Bergey’s International Society for Microbial Systematics (BISMIS) Conference that we attended in Pune, India from September 12-15, 2016.

Your support can also fund the costs associated with the research such as NextGeneration DNA Sequencing (~$200 per organism), obtaining reference strains ($100 per organism), or the reagents such as Biolog GenIII plates or API strips required to conduct such research projects.

Finally, if you would like to provide the opportunity for a student to work full-time on a research internship at Lycoming during the summer, this could be accomplished with a gift of $4000 to support a student stipend and housing subsidy.

Current (2016-2017) lab members and their projects are:

  • Jacob Miller ’17 – Cooperstown NY –Immunological and Genomic Characterization of Three Isolates of a Novel Flavobacterium Species

  • Victoria Wilson ’17 – Ringwood NJ –Characterization of Flavobacterium sp. NLM.

  • Tara Kalteider ’17 – Felton PA –Characterization of Duganella sp. TLK.

  • Alison McNett ’17 - Canton PA - Characterization of a Novel Pedobacter Strain from Mill Creek

  • Emily Carson ’18 – Elmira NY –Characterization of Pedobacter sp. R20-19 (tentatively fisheri in honor of Dr. David Fisher, Physics Professor) and Bacillus sp EAC.

  • Devin Frantz ’18 – Lehighton PA –Characterization of Flavobacterium sp. AED (tentatively franzi in honor of Dr. David Franz, Chemistry Professor), and reinstatement of the genus Kaistella

  • Kyle Jacobs ’18 – Ridgeway PA – Biology major (Anatomy & Physiology Track) - Characterization of Epilithonimonas sp. FH1 (tentatively diehli in honor of Dr. Jack Diehl, Biology Professor)

  • Dayshia Kerney ’19 – Baltimore MD – Biology major (Cell & Molecular Track) - Characterization of several novel Chryseobacterium strains

  • In gratitude for donations to this research fund, we will do the following:

  • Any gifts of $50 or more will be recognized with a personal thank you note from a sponsored student and an 8.5 x 11 inch color printout of the research poster presented by the student.

  • Any gifts of $200 or more will be recognized with an acknowledgement of support on the poster, which will also be available on the lab website http://lycofs01.lycoming.edu/~newman/Posters-Presentations.html, in addition to the thank you note with printed poster.

  • Any gifts of $500 or more will be recognized with an acknowledgement of support on the paper when it is published, in addition to the two items above.

  • Any gifts of $2000 or more will be recognized with naming rights for one of the organism when it is published, in addition to the three items above. Note that the name will have to be a latinized version that is approvable by the International Committee on the Systematics of Prokaryotes (ICSP)
